Abstract

In diesen Topogrammen waren keinerlei Versetzungen erkennbar.

The topic of the doctoral thesis is the single crystal growth and characterization of pure and strontium doped bismuth metal oxides (Bi2M4O9 (M = Ga,Al)). This materials group of bismuth metal oxides has a mullite-type structure and crystallizes in the space group Pbam with the lattice parameters a1 = 7.929 Å, a2 = 8.295Å und a3 = 5.893Å for Bi2Ga4O9. Caused by the incongruent melting behaviour the Top Seeded Solution Growth (TSSG) technique was selected as a suitable growth method for all members of this group. Single crystals with <cm3> dimension could be grown from non-stoichiometric melts, mainly with a [001] seed orientation. Generally, the growth both of Bi2Ga4O9 (pure and Sr doped) and Bi2Al4O9 was started slightly below the corresponding peritectic temperatures of 1083 °C. Light yellowish colored transparent and inclusion-free crystals of pure Bi2Ga4O9 could be obtained with dimensions up to 17mm from a 100 ml solution charge. The nearly isometric grown crystals have dominant (001) and {110} faces. Because of the very low solubility of Bi2Al4O9 in Bi2O3 the dimension of Bi2Al4O9 crystals is strongly limited in the range of 4 mm. For this reason the growth attemps were extended to some mixed compositions of Bi2(GaxAl1-x)4O9 (0.13 < x < 0.29). In contrast to other in some papers observed results on ceramic samples only a very low amount of strontium in the range of about 100 ppm could be incorporated into the mullite-type structure. Although the Strontium doped Bi2Ga4O9 single crystals have only such low Sr level the measurements of electric and ionic conductivity showed, that the conductivity is a factor of ten higher than in undoped crystals (2.47 * 10^10 S/m to 2.78 * 10^9 S/m). However, these values do not qualify single crystals of Bi2Ga4O9:Sr and Bi2Al4O9:Sr for any application as an ionic conductor. Several X-rays methods were used for characterization of the structural crystal quality. On selected (110) and (001) as-grown surfaces rocking curve mappings were made for the investigation of the mosaic structure and homogeneity. Also the white beam Laue X-ray topography, executed at the Synchrotron - Light Source ANKA (Karlsruhe), and the Lang-topography, executed at the RWTH Aachen, were applied. All methods demonstrated a very high structural quality of the crystals. The investigated sample areas are nearly dislocation-free and any low-angle grain boundaries could not be detected. The material group does not exceed the expectations, but it was shown that it is possible to grow single crystals with a high structural perfection from an incongruent melting solution by the TSSG method.English
