Abstract

This article aims to understand the arrangements found by British Enterprise mining gold in Minas Gerais to circumvent the English law of 1843 and the so-called failures of the Brazilian labor market in the late nineteenth century, a period in which the slave system was coming to its end. Our goal is to emphasize that the coexistence of slave and free labor in various sectors of the mining was a common practice employed by all British Enterprise at this time and that, for the British, slave labor, more consistent, systematic, regular and therefore more profitable, was not incompatible with industrialization and "modernization" in this sector. While it was possible, the British kept slave labor.
