Abstract

The investigation of self-conjugate nuclei is a topic of current interest in nuclear structure physics, as they allow a sensitive testing of the isospin symmetry of the nuclear forces. Such nuclei in the A=50 mass region have been the subjects of recent studies at the Institute for Nuclear Physics at the University of Cologne. As a part of these systematic low-spin gamma-spectroscopic works on medium mass self-conjugate nuclei, the N=Z nuclei 48Cr and 46V have been investigated. Both of these nuclei are placed mid-shell between the magic numbers 20 and 28 in the nuclear chart, and thus are well deformed. Rotational bands of unnatural parity are to be found in 48Cr and 46V. This work has been focussed on the decay properties of nuclear states in these bands. Low spin states in the even-even nucleus 48Cr were investigated twice using the 46Ti(3He,n) reaction at the FN tandem accelerator of the University of Cologne. The first experiment was performed with the Osiris-6 cube gamma-ray spectrometer and carried out at 9 MeV beam energy to measure gamma-gamma-coincidences and gamma-gamma-angular correlations. In another experiment the Miniball spectrometer was used for the measurement of an excitation function from 7 to 12 MeV beam energy in gamma-gamma-coincidence mode. The construction of the level scheme of 48Cr resulted in 17 excited states, nine observed for the first time by means of gamma-ray spectroscopy. New spin assignments were made, and negative parity has been assigned to the non-yrast band, which resulted from the multipole mixing ratio of its band head decay. No excited states apart from the ground state band were observed below 3.4 MeV. For comparison the results of a shell model calculation are presented. In 46V picosecond lifetimes were determined using the recoil distance Doppler-shift technique with the Cologne plunger device coupled to the Euroball IV spectrometer. The experiment was carried out using the 24Mg(28Si,alpha pn) reaction at 110 MeV at the Strasbourg Vivitron accelerator. Subsequently the differential decay curve method in coincidence mode was employed to derive lifetimes for four excited states in the K=0- band. The resulting transition probabilities in the odd-odd nucleus 46V give a comparison of isospin-allowed and forbidden E1 transitions. Especially the unsettled decay properties of the 2-,T=0 state are clarified. Furthermore the B(E2) values within the K=0- band are compared to shell model calculations, that had recently been published.English
