Abstract

In this article, we attempt to read the black pepper-driven saga of the small Japanese immigrant community in Tomé-Açu, Northeastern Pará, in the light of the two concepts of structures of opportunity and contingency. Excellent preparation, a balanced population composition, efficient communal self-organization, institutional assistance provided by agencies of both governments, as well as by scientific institutions, a specific mind-set, shared values and endurance were essential at many times, but in no way, did they guarantee success. (As we will see by comparison with the initially far more prosperous jute-producing colony of Vila Amazônia, Parintins, Amazonas.) The introduction of black pepper from Singapore in the 1930s and the post-war pepper boom were crucial to create this unique story of success of sustainable agroforest management in a 400-year history of failures. The community's resilience, its extraordinary capacity to overcome such serious backlashes as its transformation in a concentration camp during WWII and the fusarium-menace in the late 1960s, only to turn adversities into stimuli for further diversification and institutional integration shaped identity. Even as other products such as cocoa have outgrown the pepper in actual importance, the black pepper will remain central.
