Abstract

The present article deals with Gabriel García Márquez’s novel Cien años de soledad (1967) and particularly with the creative role the main character Melquíades plays as a gipsy figure. In a first chapter, the gitano Melquíades is characterized and his role for Macondo and the Buendía family is highlighted. In a second term, his creative role in respect to the development of Macondo is revealed. In a third instance, Melquíades’ poetological importance as a gipsy figure and a figure of creativity – that is of scientific, technical and cultural progress – is underlined. This analysis leads to the conclusion that Márquez constructs a gipsy figure opposite to the traditional European construction of the “Zigeuner” in literature and thus develops a universal dimension of the gipsy that exceeds ethnic boundaries and therefore becomes an emblem of humanity. At the same time, Melquíades’ poetological dimension proposes the beginning of an emancipated South American literature that breaks with European tradition, although referring to it.
