Abstract
Against the background of demographic change, this dissertation examines the relationship between productive activities and the well-being of people in later life. The focus is on grandparents who provide care for their grandchildren. The theoretical approach is based on multiple role occupation (role enhancement and role strain theory) from a gender perspective. The theoretical discussion is (critically) embedded in the discourse on successful and productive aging. The empirical analysis is based on longitudinal data from the German Ageing Survey (DEAS). The research questions are: Does a within-person change in the provision of grandchild care influence grandparents’ health? How is grandparental childcare combined with further productive activities within and outside the realms of the family, and how does these combinations matter in terms of life satisfaction? Does grandparenthood and grandchild care compete with or add to grandparents’ involvement in leisure activities, and does it influence with whom these activities are carried out?
