The article is aimed at reconstructing the institutional and personnel development of sociology in Cologne, starting from the Research Institute for Social Sciences in 1919-the first institute for social science in Germany-to today's Institute for Sociology and Social Psychology (ISS). In doing so, the article refers, among other things, to contemporary witness statements from important protagonists. Cologne is a pivotal location for the history of sociology in Germany because it is the place from which the first steps toward the institutionalization of the emerging individual scientific disciplines were taken and it became the center of the German-speaking sociological community. After 1945, sociology from Cologne promoted the rise of empirical social research in Germany and became one of the most influential centers of this discipline. To this day, Cologne is known for its decidedly empirical sociology. Among the key persons who have contributed significantly to the development of sociology in Cologne are the former chairholders Leopold von Wiese, Rene Konig, Erwin K. Scheuch, Renate Mayntz, Friedhelm Neidhardt, and Jurgen Friedrichs.
