Definition of the problem Research in the area of forensic psychiatry, especially clinical issues, is very rare. Arguments While increasing numbers of patients and law reforms are challenging clinical work, epidemiological and developmental data for forensic risk assessment are still missing. In addition, research cannot answer which kind of treatment is most useful for both overcoming mental disorders of patients and protecting society from risks associated with dangerous, mentally ill offenders. These issues become even more prominent when cases like Gustl Mollath question the validity of forensic prognosis. Conclusion This paper will discuss efficiency of forensic treatment programs in the face of both technical and ethical aspects. Ethical principles based on social ethics may provide arguments for ethical research in this area.
