This article discusses the motif of Branntwein (brandy) in the 19th century fairy tale. Against the contextual backdrop of abstinence and temperance movements, it provides a detailed analysis of the fairy tale collection of the Brothers Grimm as well as contemporary texts (Ludwig Bechstein, Ludwig Aurbacher), and traces the social marginalisation of the stimulant Branntwein as well as its demonisation as a magical universal remedy.
