Background The academic curriculum-based teaching of palliative medicine is differently integrated in the funded Comprehensive Cancer Center (CCC). Recommendations are discussed, agreed and reported because a structural concept care shall be given to promote teaching of specialized palliative care in a CCC. Methods In a panel of experts from the Palliative Medicine workinggroup within the CCC network, nine statements about teaching in the CCCs were formulated based on guidelines and catalogues. 14 physicians with management and teaching responsibilities from the palliative care facilities of the CCCs were surveyed about a quantitative design using an online questionnaire. A statement was consented, as long as the agreement in the working group was >= 80 %. Comments were recorded via free text fields. Results 12 from 14 persons took part in the survey from May to August 2016. They agreed on seven from nine recommendations. The agreement regarding the mandatory part of teaching (minimum 1.5 semester hours per week = 20 lessons each 45 min) went unanimous (100 %). Besides respondents recommend in the palliative care a choice option for medical students in the practical year (92%). The recommendation to use one full time worker who is employed for teaching, reached no consensus (75 %). However, the person responsible for teaching should be assigned a 1/4 position for administrative tasks (83%). Discussion The medical directors of specialized palliative medicine in the German CCCs mostly agree upon which structural characteristics of the academic curriculum-based teaching of palliative medicine shall be taken into account. The recommendations may be integrated into a structural plan of CCC for promoting academic teaching in palliative care.
