Abstract

Starting from an outline of the specifically Christian skepticism about poetry, the paper introduces the transition from a structural definition of the ancient genera dicendi to a functional one in Augustine's De doctrina christiana, which is providing the base for a Christian rhetoric. In a second step the article concentrates on the prerequisites such as the justification of a Christian poetics in Dante's work, which lead to an inversing relation of poetical and religious speech in his Divina commedia. The article shows how in the Vita nova the traditional exaggeration of the beloved lady to the transcendent figure also captures the singer, in order to enhance his position as well. In the absolute continuation of the reorganization of his role, the Divina commedia finally constructs a situation in which the biblical word of revelation through the temporary loss of its effectiveness now needs the poetic speech for the renewal of Christ's work of salvation. Dante uses a narration of election, which reverses the Christological model of incarnation. The arrival of the word in the world is replaced by the journey of the chosen poet, the administrator of the word, through the hereafter of the redeemed world. It is this inversion of the history of salvation that makes poesia a new instrument of revelation.
