Abstract

The gestational period is a critical and vulnerable time for fetal organ development; therefore, environmental influences may lead to disorders of organ morphology and organ function, which in turn may predispose towards disease in later life. Whereas English-speaking countries have coined the expression of developmental origins of health and disease (DoHaD), German-speaking countries predominantly use the term fetal or perinatal programming. Traditionally, many environmental impacts have been studied from a teratological perspective primarily focusing on malformation syndromes. Many adverse effects, however, do not necessarily manifest as obvious malformations at birth but initially cause subclinical effects. The present article gives an overview of possible implications of common and frequent environmental factors during pregnancy on the fetoplacental unit and ultimately on the child's disposition towards neurological, pulmonological and renal diseases in later life. We present in detail data from studies originating from the areas of substance abuse (e.g. alcohol, tobacco, medication and illegal drugs), toxicology, radiation as well as acute and chronic stress.
