Abstract

Background: Although empirical findings support exposure treatments, these types of interventions are seldom used in psychotherapeutic practice. Objective: To identify factors on an individual and institutional level that are relevant for the later use of exposure therapy in an outpatient setting. The study focuses on the German government-approved psychotherapy training system. Method: In all, 20 training centers and 398 former candidates of these centers were surveyed. Using multilevel analysis, the influence of various individual and contextual factors was tested. Results: Significant predictors on an individual level were type of education (child and adolescent vs. adult psychotherapy) and content-related factors (e.g., attitudes of graduates toward exposure therapy). The association of the training center with a university was relevant for the increased tater use of exposure treatments. Conclusion: In psychotherapy training, providing more knowledge of methodology- and disorder-specific use of exposure leads to a more effective dissemination of this intervention. Candidates and their later patients profit from the practical experience with the methodology, especially if they develop realistic assumptions regarding the efficacy and applicability of exposure therapy.
