Abstract

Teachers, in particular, feel the pressure of the current reforms aiming at the implementation of inclusive education. They find themselves faced with new demands for which they were not prepared within the framework of their initial training. Within the context of these developments, the present contribution critically enquires whether post-qualification in the field of special educational needs competences could contribute to the development of a form of teacher training oriented by inclusion. The empirical basis is provided by selected results of a comprehensive evaluation study on a measure of continuous post-qualification carried out in North Rhine-Westphalia (VOBASOF). These results show that the further development of inclusive education will not succeed through a purely quantitative increase of special educational needs competence within the system, but rather qualification measures need to be revised and redesigned in view of the challenges of inclusive education.
