Abstract

Bosnia and Herzegovina has a part in Slavia Orthodoxa, Slavia Romana, Slavia Islamica, and Slavia Iudaica while at the same time using varieties of just one language, Serbo-Croatian. However, since “script follows religion”, this language has been written in four scripts (Glagolitic, Cyrillic, Arabic, Latin) and three variants of the Cyrillic script (Eastern Cyrillic, “Croatian Cyrillic”, “Begovica”). The present paper retraces the development of the various types of confessional biscriptality over the centuries. It shows that since the Ottoman conquest Bosnia and Herzegovina has always been pluricentric because the religious groups have differed in their script use. A general tendency of Bosnian script history is the gradual replacement of Cyrillic, which was originally used by all religious groups as the traditional Bosnian script, with the Latin alphabet, which is used by all religious groups today.
