Abstract

In Wilhelminian society, Denmark and Danishness were mostly constructed as part of a ‘north’ and a northernness sharing a deeply-rooted kinship with Germany, but at the same time as a pre-capitalist counterpart to a rapidly modernizing German society. However, Danish films figured prominently both in German cinemas and in cinematic debates as moral dramas with tingling piquancy, and were produced by companies that were highly successful in economic terms. How was this conflict between a pristine ‘Nordic’ Denmark on the one hand and the Danish films on the other hand negotiated, and perhaps even resolved, in German advertisements for Danish films and in discourses on Danish films?

Samtidig indtog dansk stumfilm med sine moralske dramaer og kildrende pikanterier en prominent position i tyske biografer og blev produceret af moderne og stærkt fremgangsrige selskaber.
