Abstract

This review article is based on a selective literature search in PubMed and Google Scholar for quality management in pathology and biobanking, while also taking into consideration our own experience in daily practice. Quality management has its origin in the manufacturing industry. In pathology, the establishment of a quality management system is an important prerequisite for quality control. This is based on a quality management manual, which comprises the organizational structures, quality system and operating procedures as well as legal principles in written form. An operating quality management enables high quality processes and results in daily patient care. Quality management is assessed by independent certification authorities at regular intervals. Biobanks are often associated to diagnostic services as pathological institutes and serve as collections of biological materials for biomedical research. For good research practice, reliable quality management is essential for standardized sample processing, including data management and ensuring ethical and data protection guidelines.
