Representations of crime in the media have a significant impact on collective images of crime. This applies not only to news and documentaries about real crime, but also to fictional formats. Against the background of scientific findings, this essay will discuss to what extent and how particularly movies and other fictional formats shape social (mis)conceptions about crime, how this effects the actual exposure to crime and what opportunities arise when criminological topics and findings are also presented in fictional and entertainment formats.
