Abstract

Secondary mitral and tricuspid regurgitation are common in heart failure caused by geometrical or functional alterations of the ventricles and/or atria despite structurally normal valve apparatus. By inducing volume overload of the ventricles, mitral or tricuspid regurgitation substantially contributes to heart failure symptoms and progression and thus critically impacts prognosis. Due to high surgical risk, therapeutic options were traditionally limited to general heart failure therapy. Yet, the development of transcatheter techniques allows treatment of secondary AV valve regurgitation with acceptable risk and based on recent trial results has become a cornerstone of contemporary heart failure therapy. Herein, we will give an overview of interventional strategies for the treatment of secondary mitral and tricuspid regurgitation and discuss their current role in clinical practice.
