Abstract

The general aim of this dissertation is to advance the understanding of what individual and country-level factors explain differences in civic participation among natives and immigrants living in Europe. More specifically, each of the three studies aims to fill in a research gap in the civic participation literature. In the first study (chapter 2), we examine the differences in civic participation between natives, Western, and non-Western immigrants living in the Netherlands, and test for differential effects of well-known individual determinants of civic involvement in various types of organizations. The second study presented in chapter 3 aims to explain variation in formal volunteering between and within 33 European countries, by looking at the effect of a set of cultural and economic contextual determinants. Study 3 examines the role of religious culture of the host country in explaining variation in civic membership among immigrants living in Europe.
