Abstract

This dissertation presents a comprehensive description of the phonology of Nambikwara, a polysynthetic language spoken by the Kithãulhu people in the Brazilian savannahs of the Central West. Initially, a historical, ethnographic, and linguistic outline of the Nambikwaran languages is provided, followed by an introduction to the main morphological structures used in this study. The segmental phonology and lower-prosodic phonology related to the stress and tone systems are described based on a dataset that has been collected, analyzed, and interpreted by the author, situated in the framework of generative and auto-segmental phonology. This study also provides insights into the morphology-phonology interface of Nambikwara, especially related to syllabification, stress, and tone – the latter being employed to characterize some types of morphological and morphosyntactic constructions.

Inicialmente, fornece-se um esboço histórico, etnográfico e linguístico acerca das línguas Nambikwara, seguido de uma introdução às principais estruturas morfológicas utilizadas neste estudo. A fonologia segmental e a fonologia prosódica de níveis mais baixos relacionados aos sistemas de acento e tom são descritas com base em um conjunto de dados coletado, analisado e interpretado pelo autor, situado no âmbito da fonologia gerativa e autossegmental. Este estudo também fornece insights sobre a interface morfologia-fonologia Nambikwara, especialmente relacionada à silabificação, ao acento e tom – sendo este último empregado para caracterizar alguns tipos de construções morfológicas e morfossintáticas.
