Abstract
Gender inequality in the labor market persists despite the efforts of policymakers. In this dissertation, I provide both methodological and empirical contributions to the estimation of gender inequality and an understanding of its sources and policy implications. In Chapter 2, I begin by investigating a universal factor affecting most women: the negative impact of motherhood on their careers. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on two distinctive groups — disadvantaged young women and female top managers — examining the specific barriers they encounter in the labor market and the effects of policies aimed at improving their outcomes. I develop methodological innovations for estimating the effects of motherhood and universal percentage-based quotas. Employing these novel methods, I provide new empirical insights into the heterogeneity of motherhood effects by maternal age at first birth, the gender differential in the effectiveness of subsidized employment, and the causal effects of increased female representation in the boardroom on firm performance.
