Abstract

In this special issue we assess different multispecies relations in Southern Africa and bringtogether scholars from various disciplines to contribute to the still emerging field of multispeciesethnography and add our perspectives to the ongoing debate, which we situate in Namibia, SouthAfrica and Zambia. In the following we shortly summarise the key aspects of the contributionsto this special issue and give an outlook on how research about multispecies relations can alsoinform other debates on coexistence, multispecies justice and environmental (in)justice. Dealingwith the characteristics and particularities of regional histories, we include various inhabitantsof these ecosystems into our analysis and raise a multitude of questions around the notions ofmultispecies relations and coexistence — adding our perspectives to the hitherto rather fewaccounts with a multispecies focus from this region (see, for instance, Du Plessis 2019, 2022;Nathen 2016; Wels 2020; Wels and Kamsteeg 2023). We want to foreground three major themesthat are particularly important in the analysis of multispecies relations in Southern Africa: (1) theprecolonial, colonial and postcolonial histories that shape these relations (thus, the temporalityof multispecies relations); (2) the locally specific perspectives of residents and their experienceswith multispecies relations (thus, situating multispecies relations in specific culturally and sociallyembedded contexts); and (3) the political decisions made, especially with regard to the planningand implementation of environmental infrastructures and conservation in the region (thus, thepolitical ecology of multispecies relations).
