Abstract

The chapter examines how the ‘Danishness’ of border-crossing silent cinema stars was received in the German language area. The chapter is based on two groups of sources. One is presentations of Danish film stars in German fan magazines, examining the discourses in which they were placed. The other is collections of fan letters to Olaf Fønss, Asta Nielsen and Clara Wieth (Pontoppidan). These collections are exceptionally rich for the period and offer a unique perspective on silent cinema fan cultures, showing that the national origins of these stars tend not to be treated in the fan letters. Together, these two groups of sources place the stars at the juncture between Danish and German film, entangling the two into a Danish-German film culture.
