Abstract

Der Beitrag untersucht die Phänomene von Händigkeit und deren sprachliche sowie kulturelle Attribuierungen, mit dem Schwerpunkt auf Selbstdifferenzierungen und Selbstattribuierungen. Während die Händigkeitsforschung meist externe Zuschreibungen wie „Links-“ oder „Rechtshänder“ in den Fokus stellt, argumentiert der Beitrag, dass Selbstattribuierungen für die individuelle Identitätsbildung eine bedeutendere Rolle spielen. Anhand introspektiver und kulturwissenschaftlicher Beobachtungen wird gezeigt, dass stereotype Zuschreibungen zur Händigkeit empirisch unbegründet und rein sozial konstruiert sind. Im Gegensatz dazu zeigt sich im materiellen und körperlichen Ausdruck der Händigkeit – etwa durch Kleidung, Frisur und Körperhaltung – ein klar kodifiziertes semiotisches System, das soziale Normen und Identitätssignale widerspiegelt. Besonders hervorgehoben wird dabei eine auffällige Diskrepanz: Händigkeit wird im materiellen Kulturkontext stark sichtbar gemacht, während sprachlich vergleichsweise wenige Differenzierungsmittel existieren, obwohl Sprache sonst ein zentrales Medium sozialer Distinguierung darstellt. Der Beitrag übt vorsichtige Kritik an sprachpolitischen Vorschlägen für einen „händergerechten“ Sprachgebrauch, der Händigkeitsunterschiede in Kontexten überbetont, in denen sie funktional kaum relevant sind. Abschließend wird für einen pragmatischen, kontextspezifischen Umgang mit Händigkeit in Sprache und Gesellschaft plädiert und der Ausgleich materieller Diskriminierung von Linkshändern als vorrangiges Anliegen propagiert.

Translated abstract:	Abstract Language This paper examines the phenomena of handedness and its linguistic as well as cultural attributions, focusing on self-differentiations and self-attributions. While handedness research usually centers on external ascriptions such as “left-” or “right-handed,” this contribution argues that self-attributions play a more significant role in individual identity formation. Based on introspective and cultural-scientific observations, it is shown that stereotypical attributions related to handedness are empirically unfounded and purely socially constructed. In contrast, the material and bodily expressions of handedness – such as clothing, hairstyle, and posture – reveal a clearly codified semiotic system reflecting social norms and identity signals. A striking discrepancy is highlighted: handedness is highly visible in the material cultural context, whereas comparatively few linguistic differentiation tools exist, although language otherwise serves as a central medium of social distinction. The paper cautiously criticizes language-political proposals for a “handedness-sensitive” usage that overemphasizes handedness differences in contexts where they are functionally hardly relevant. In conclusion, it advocates a pragmatic, context-specific handling of handedness in language and society and promotes addressing material discrimination against left-handers as a primary concern.
