Abstract

This Leaf explores how storytelling can contribute to climate change literacy by addressing climate change as a cultural and educational challenge rather than a purely scientific one. It situates current debates on climate communication within interdisciplinary research from the humanities, education, and cognitive studies, arguing that neither the transmission of facts nor emotional appeals alone are sufficient to foster meaningful engagement or behavioural change. Instead, the leaf emphasises the value of literary reading practices that embrace ambiguity. By reflecting on narrative strategies in climate fiction and their educational implications, it highlights the importance of critical literacy and interpretive competence for engaging with socio-ecological transformation. The leaf ultimately advocates closer collaboration between the humanities and climate research to strengthen culturally grounded approaches to climate communication and education.
