Abstract

At the core of this dissertation is an interest in the connection between voters and parties. Parties have incentives to represent preferences and positions of their voters. The link between voters and parties, however, is influenced by numerous factors. In this dissertation, I focus on the role of the economy and, more particularly, of housing markets on how voters and parties interact. I develop a structural perspective on how asset ownership and the economy affect political behaviour and how these effects, in turn, create incentives for political parties and develop political implications on their own. The dissertation is structured along a stylized political process from voters to parties and evolves around three main chapters. In chapter 2, I investigate in how far homeownership and house price changes affect voting behaviour on the individual level. In the third chapter, I move to the party level and assess in how far political parties respond to fluctuations on housing markets in their programmatic positioning. The fourth chapter builds on the third chapter and asks, more generally, how changes in the economy affect political parties’ positions at elections. In combination, the main contribution of this dissertation is the development of a micro-founded, structural model of voting and party behaviour and a rigorous empirical assessment of its functioning on different levels of analysis.
