Abstract

In several settlement archaeological studies, the question is raised, at which distance two finds should be found to denote two different sites. Since the 1960 s researchers have called for an empirical study on this topic. This contribution addresses this issue and develops a method that seeks to answer this question by referring to the German and English theoretical debates on the terms,Fundstelle Fundplatz site and Siedlung (settlement). A transect excavation in Saxony-Anhalt and the excavated features of the Late Neolithic, Early Bronze Age, Late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age are analysed to draw culturally specific conclusions. In the spirit of off-site archaeology, the features are regarded as a blanket that spreads continuously across the landscape. The delimitation of clusters, the estimation of settlement sizes and their distances from each other are calculated with the help of kernel density estimations and cumulative distances. Thus, a method of intra-site analysis is elevated to the inter-site level. It can be shown that this is a profitable approach, which can be used especially for road and pipeline excavations.
