Abstract

The article outlines a definition of literature that starts from its primary medium (sic)book printing <. The concept of literature thus defined and determined by the medium is distinguished from poetic discourses centered around the voice and designed on it. On this basis, the function of literature is analyzed, whereby I assume that medium and function of literature are intertwined. The inquiry about the medium inevitably also raises the question about function. It is proposed that the function of literature be sought in a fascination of the gaze that results from the provocation of consciousness to the perception of communication - and finally leads to the materiality of communication.
