Abstract

Wilhelm Raabe's story Frau Salome has given rise to unsatisfactory interpretations (artist's novella, Harz Mountains literature, beautiful Jewess) and to justified discontent. If one reads this especially puzzling text as arisky attempt to aconcealing narration, with an incestuous event as aconcealed but indirectly signified cause for action, then many questions which are raised by this Raabe-typical helper story find conclusive answers. Frau Salome proves to be an example of the poetic complexity of late German realism.
