Abstract

A shaken baby syndrome often results in severe or even fatal injuries and is caused by aviolent shaking of an infant or asmall child. For the diagnosis, the symptom triad of subdural bleeding, retinal bleeding and diffuse encephalopathy is still almost pathognomonic, if differential diagnoses, such as in particular other trauma, coagulation disorders and glutaric aciduria typeI can be excluded. It can be assumed that asevere shaking trauma immediately leads to symptoms that are also perceptible to medical laypersons. For the reliable proof of ashaking trauma in criminal law all relevant connecting factors must be included in the diagnostics in order to be able to prove the often classical and specific constellation of findings in shaken baby syndrome.
