Abstract

Influenced by philosophy of the Enlightenment, Voltaire and Alexander von Humboldt pursued diverse intellectual interests that included several disciplines and subjects. Works such as Essai sur les moeurs et l'esprit des nations (Geneve, 1756) and Kosmos. Entwurf einer physischen Beschreibung der Welt (Stuttgart, 1845-1862) were written in order to display their readers the broadest possible knowledge on their respective disciplines: history and history of knowledge. Even though both were written as essays, a distant reading (according to Franco Moretti) reveal to what extent both Voltaire and Humboldt applied strategies of the encyclopedia that could allow us to see them as such.
