Abstract

Balint group work has been proved to be effective for doctors regarding patient related issues like empathy and better skilled listening to the patient and doctor related issues like impoved self-esteem and work satisfaction. The new developed Balint Group Session Questionnaire (BG-F) was applied in a large sample with 1460 doctors in 352 different Balint groups. Significant effects were found for somatic doctors and case presenting doctors who showed improved reflection of transference issues and for emotional and cognitive learning. Participants with longer experience in Balint work demonstrated more skills in recognizing relationship dynamics in doctor-patient relationship and mirroring aspects in Balint group work. The results confirm important objectives of Balint work towards an improved communicative competence.
