Abstract

Otto the Great's coronation in 936 may be regarded as a commonplace in scholarly investigations. However, a closer look at the academic accounts of the event itself reveal a number of substantial discrepancies, so that seemingly objective textbook knowledge turns into a mere alleged certainty. Although there is a consensus regarding the location of the dynastic succession (Aachen), the question of the coronation's precise time has led to diverging responses. In turn, the choice of location has been explained only superficially by indicating the changes of rule in the West Frankish dominion without further in-depth exploration. By contrast, much subtlety has gone into the factual reconstructing of the event, notwithstanding that the historiographical summaries do not offer a consistent narrative. The same holds true for the question - rarely asked with any precision - as to the object of Otto's kingship. Consequently, the present article represents an examination of these matters, embedded in a revision of the royal succession.
