Abstract

Historians such as Reinhart Koselleck have insisted on the link between the revolutionary events of the end of the 186 century and the politicisation of time round about 1800. However, few studies have focused on the perception of time after the French revolution per se. This paper purposes to examine the way time is perceived in the Memoirs of agents and witnesses of events. Through a corpus well known to both the Revolution's contemporaries and its historians, this paper analyses the narrative's temporal dimension. The Memorialists, despite holding opposite political views, produced testimonies striking at times in their resemblances. Theses similarities reflect the shared perception of a new era as well as the need to oppose the lack of temporal order of events with the linearity of narrative.
