Abstract

A 13-year-old boy developed insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus 10 years after suffering from hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) caused by Shiga toxin-producing enterohemorrhagic E. coli (STEC-HUS). There were no signs of insulin resistance but there was an insulin deficiency without the detection of diabetes-specific autoantibodies. Previous case reports in the literature described the recurrence of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus years after remission following the manifestation of STEC-HUS with hyperglycemia requiring insulin therapy. This article describes a case of insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus years after suffering from STEC-HUS without the need for insulin therapy in the acute treatment of the HUS. This illustrates the importance of long-term follow-up in all patients with HUS.
