Abstract

Background Gastric cancer often presents in a locally advanced stage which cannot be cured by endoscopic resection. In November 2019, the new German S3 guideline for the diagnosis and treatment of adenocarcinoma of the stomach and gastroesophageal junction was published. Aim The goal of this work is to summarize the current standard of therapy for adenocarcinoma of the stomach. Materials and methods A literature search with a focus on locally advanced tumors was performed and compared to the current guideline. Results In the new German S3 guideline published in autumn 2019, multimodal therapy for locally advanced gastric cancer was underlined, as it leads to a cure rate of nearly 50%. The FLOT regimen which includes 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), oxaliplatin, docetaxel (e.g., Taxotere (R)) has been clearly established as the European standard for perioperative chemotherapy. However, further optimization of the treatment within the framework of clinical trials is necessary. Conclusion For patients with locally advanced gastric cancer, multimodal therapy is standard.
