Abstract

Wearables are tiny wearable computers with various sensors for continuous non-invasive monitoring covering a range of vital signs. Cost-effective mobile devices and powerful data analysis tools present new opportunities in assessing body functions (digital biomarkers). A PubMed literature search and analysis on their clinical-scientific use in publications from 2008 to 2018 served to ascertain whether wearables are ready for prime time in a medical context. Out of the search hits, 79 of 314 covered clinical trials on wearables, including 16 randomized controlled trials. Motion sensors were most frequently used to measure defined movements, movement disorders or general physical activity. Around 20 % of the studies covered sensors for detecting cardiovascular parameters. The majority of studies took the wrist as the sensor location (22.8 %). This analysis indicates that wearables may be used in a precisely defined medical context while taking complex influencing factors into account.
