Abstract

Literary studies have recently undergone a turn towards economics, which in medieval philology has led to increased interest in the scholarly discourse field of pre-modern gift economics. In this context, the present article deals with the socio-economic reference level of debt and credit relationships, which research on economic history has in recent years seen as a crucial characteristic of the pre-industrial world. Against the background of this consensus among researchers on economic history, a case study on the motif of love tokens in Romanesque -German love poetry serves as a starting point for exploring the possible connotation potential of the lay nobility's mortgage-backed lending transactions, which have been richly attested since the 11th century and which authors used to gain an analytical understanding of the asymmetrical fin'amor relationship.
