Abstract

This article takes a special stance on a family of uses of the French imparfait which are not usually described as being related. A common designation for some of them is narrative imparfait. However, we integrate a wider array of cases in our description. They share the property of being part of the narrative development of a text, more precisely, they update narrative time. By implementing a set of factors which concern their functioning in discourse, we are able to distinguish five types in a fine-grained manner. One of the factors is prominence, which has only recently been introduced into the study of tense and aspect. Finally, we address the relationship between the different uses and the text types they are expected to appear in.
