Abstract

Patients with coronary artery disease with and without myocardial infarction frequently suffer from psychological disorders such as depression, pathological anxiety and chronic experience of stress. These psychological disorders are facilitated and amplified, respectively, by social isolation and distinctive personality patterns. Independent from classical cardiovascular risk factors they have a negative influence on quality of life and prognosis in patients with coronary artery disease. They should be early depicted in clinical practice and adequately treated by psychotherapy. A multimodal rehabilitation not only allows to reduce moderate symptoms of depression and anxiety but also to support a healthier life style. It is well documented that psychotherapy not only reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety but also experience of stress. Some studies even show a prognostic benefit in successfully treated patients. In patients with a psychological comorbidity a collaborative approach appears to be well suited to achieve positive effects. To better reflect the importance of psychosocial risk factors in daily practice, psychocardiological facts should be more intensively implemented into medical education and training.
