Abstract

Considering the historians' recent feudalism controversy I come back to the medieval love poetry's feudal vocabulary and imagery and how it has been discussed in their literary construction and functional implications by the social-historical research since the beginning of the 20th century. It turns out that neither the Romance nor the German love poetry shows any dominance in feudal imagery, on the contrary there is an amazing flexibility in the language of contractual activities, which may occasionally refer very precisely to specific feudal rituals, but normally explores a broad range of contractual imagery.
