Abstract

The essay traces the presence of the mathematical term 'integration' in the work of Thomas Pynchon and Neal Stephenson. Taking up Leibniz' parallelism between mathematical and perceptual integration, the work of both writers shows the complexity of 'the mathematical reference' in literature. In a larger context, the essay argues that the separation of literature and the sciences is not a given, but our own, deeply modern invention. It is our decision to keep literary studies separated from the sciences or to show that they have always been part of a communal project to express, explain and invent 'practice of life'.
