Abstract

Due to demographic changes and the joint shortage of highly skilled employees organizations have intensified their efforts to enhance organizational attractiveness. However, applicants define what makes an organization attractive. In two experiments in which students of business administration rated job advertisements, instrumental and symbolic factors of organizational attractiveness were manipulated. Familiarity with the firm significantly influenced organizational attractiveness while labels of best employer competitions and positive organizational culture did not. Results indicate the higher importance of symbolic benefits as compared to corporate values.
