Abstract

The increase in German income inequality since the 1980s has attracted considerable scientific and political attention but remained largely unexplained. A frequently voiced hypothesis assumes that the trend towards educationally homogamous partnerships is a crucial factor in this development. Whereas in an educationally heterogamous household economic advantages and disadvantages offset each other, the homogamous household aggravates inequalities by accumulating relative (dis-)advantages. This hypothesis is put to an empirical test. First, a household typology is derived from the cross-tabulation of spousesE1/4 educational qualifications. The effect of educational expansion and mating preferences on the distribution of household types is estimated using log-linear models. In a second step, weights derived from these models are used to estimate income inequality in three counterfactual scenarios. It turns out that educational expansion and mating preferences at best have only a marginal effect on West German income inequality, which-contrary to the expectations-decreases income inequality.
