Abstract

Dieser Artikel plädiert für eine neue Methodik, um das Feld der mittelalterlichen Zünfte zu erforschen. Er geht von einer Taxonomie von Form und Funktion aus, die sowohl die Komplexität solcher Organisationen als auch ihre kaleidoskopische Rolle in der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft beleuchtet. Hinweise deuten darauf hin, dass der Oberbegriff „Zunft" vier verschiedene Aspekte umfasst: Die gewerbliche Zunft, die Bruderschaft, die politische Zunft und die militärische Einung. In Straßburg und Zürich zum Beispiel, zwei „idealen" Städten in Bezug auf Zünfte, lassen sich diese vier Aspekte deutlich unterscheiden. Ebenso müssen die vier verschiedenen Funktionen der Zünfte berücksichtigt werden: Berufsständische Vertretung, religiös-karitative Aufgaben, politische Partizipation und Verteidigungsaufgaben. Zukünftige Forschungen sollten der Heterogenität der Funktionen der Zünfte mehr Aufmerksamkeit schenken, da dies neue und interessante Einblicke nicht nur in die Leistungen und das Selbstverständnis der Organisationen, sondern auch in die mittelalterlichen sozioökonomischen Strukturen versprechen kann, selbst in Städten, in denen Zünfte verboten wurden, z.B. in Nürnberg 1349 oder in Frankfurt 1366.

Translated abstract:	Abstract Language This article argues for a new methodology in order to enquire into the field of medieval guilds beginning with a taxonomy of form and function that illuminates both the complexity of such organizations and their kaleidoscopic roles in medieval society. First, evidence indicates that the umbrella term “guild” includes four different aspects: the craft-guild, the fraternity, the corporate guild, and the military unit. In Strasbourg and Zurich for example, two “ideal” cities in respect of guilds these four aspects can be clearly distinguished. Second, one must consider the four different functions performed by guilds: professional representation, religious and charitable service, political participation, and tasks of defense. Future research should pay more attention to the heterogeneity of guild functions and their roles as this may promise new and intriguing insights not only into the organizations’ services and self-perception but also into medieval socio-economic structures, even in towns where guilds had been banned, e.g. in Nuremberg in 1349 or in Frankfurt in 1366.
