On 9 June 2021 the Institute of Forensic Medicine in Cologne can look back to the 50th anniversary of its foundation. It is one of the most well-equipped institutes in Germany. There were two events that ensured the current existence of the Institute: the representatives of forensic medicine at the University of Cologne tried to assert the idea that the subject of forensic medicine would become an independent academic discipline and they represented the social necessity of a forensic institute. Furthermore, the institute should be affiliated as an academic institute to the University of Cologne. These events had a direct influence on the developmental history of the institute. This article is primarily based on archival sources. The Archives of Cologne University possess an extensive number of documents, which provide information on the negotiations between the Faculty of Medicine, the University and the City of Cologne as well as the provisional planning, which ultimately enabled an operational institute. Consequently, this article is based on these archived documents as they are a representative contemporary source. Over the years, however, only a few archival documents have been preserved so that there are still some unanswered questions, especially concerning conditions in the early modern period. Thus, the history cannot be completely reconstructed.
