Abstract

In view of the ever-increasing importance of digital methods for cultural studies research, this essay discusses the potentials for theater historiography. It is not only about the innovative, digitally supported methods, but rather about the specific logic of theater historical research. Starting from a critical discussion of the discourse within the discipline on the development of new research questions and paradigms, the essay finally formulates the perspective of a comprehensive media ecology, in which demands for a substantial decolonization of historical discourse can also be pointed out. Media ecology is characterized as: polyglot, polycentric, polyphonic and polymorphic as well as permeable and networked in a comprehensive sense. One example of such a perspective is the model project Cologne Chrono Atlas, which compiles event and personal data and allows them to be networked in an overarching model. Although the project is still in its infancy, it is already clear that the method chosen here reveals shadowed aspects of theater history, such as the entrepreneurship of female principals, no longer as anecdotal individual cases, but as constants of the field.
