Abstract

The aerial view introduced in the first half of the 20th century a new form of perception that completely changed the concept of landscape and played a fundamental role in the development of a modern urban imaginary. The following article initially summarizes the characteristics of this modern aerial view through the notes that the architect and urban planner Le Corbusier took during his travels through Latin America. Then, we examine the vestiges of that gaze in contemporary Latin American literature. More specifically, the article focuses on four literary examples of landings in Santiago de Chile in order to study how the desire for urban unity permeates literature through aerial view. Distant star by Roberto Bolano, Synco by Jorge Baradit, An empty house by Carlos Cerda and Blood in the eye of Lina Meruane are built around three types of views that are cast on the capital: that of the poet-conqueror, that of the tourist and that of the Chilean who returns. These vertical views convey a gradual distancing from urban reality and its fragmentation problems.
