Abstract

Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease, which is characterized by the development of non-necrotizing granulomas. When sarcoidosis is clinically suspected, in addition to a suitable imaging procedure a histological examination is necessary for evidence of granulomas. Possible differential diagnoses must be thoroughly excluded before making a diagnosis. The lungs are very often affected (90%). The probability of kidney involvement is approximately 5%. Renal involvement can also be the first manifestation of sarcoidosis as the only organ involved. Treatment is necessary when a symptomatic organ manifestation is present, which can potentially lead to organ damage. Moreover, cardiac sarcoidosis and neurosarcoidosis represent clear indications for treatment. Treatment of sarcoidosis consists of cortisone and other immunosuppressive drugs. Overall, the prognosis for sarcoidosis is good.
